What skills or lessons have you learned recently?
Self-prioritization
The skill I learned is the art of saying no and being kind towards myself.
We often glorify and celebrate selflessness to such a large extent that it leads to the creation of two groups: the ones who carry no burden and the ones who carry others’ burdens along with their own burden too. Thus, there is a need for a silent revolution that urges individuals to prioritize themselves too.
My journey came when I realized one fine day that I will not only burden myself but in fact bury myself if I constantly consider others’ needs at the expense of my own! Giving too many chances, justifying ill treatment, and sidelining personal feelings can inadvertently pave the way for others to walk all over you, leading to a sense of being taken for granted. This harsh reality prompts the question: Why not be kind to oneself first?
Contrary to popular beliefs, prioritizing one’s own needs is not selfish but, in fact, an act of self-love and preservation. It involves setting boundaries and learning to say no when necessary. Placing oneself first doesn’t negate kindness; instead, it ensures that kindness begins within one’s own heart. For how can I be kind and honest to others if I can’t be kind to myself?
Embracing the art of saying no and prioritizing oneself is not rejecting being compassionate; rather, it’s a declaration that kindness begins within. After all, a fulfilled and empowered individual is better equipped to contribute positively to the world, creating a ripple effect of genuine kindness that extends far beyond the self.
