Dogs or cats?

Dogs or cats?

As soon as I saw this prompt, I looked at my dog, who was snuggling beside me, looking at me with his wonder-filled eyes, as if he already knew I was about to write something hopelessly biased. I didn’t have to think twice.I would choose Dogs, without a moment’s hesitation. I have grown up with them, and calling them “pets” has never quite felt right. They have always been family.

Lately, though, I’ve come across countless memes and unsolicited opinions labelling dog lovers as overly sentimental, elitist, or even performative. I rarely respond. Not because I lack a counterargument, but because what I mostly feel is pity. Pity for those who have never experienced the profound comfort of a wagging tail greeting them at the door, the warmth of a loyal presence, or the unspoken assurance that someone is always on their side.

I have not had much experience with cats, except for this one time when a little cat made a chair on my balcony a hangout spot. At first, I kept my distance, but slowly, with quiet persistence, it curled closer, purring as if trying to convince me not to pass judgment on whether I am a cat person or a dog person. Still, my heart belongs to dogs but not in a way that excludes admiration for cats or any other animals.

Come to think of it, we cannot even turn affection into categories, as though love must be selective or competitive. Not only experience but also research has proved that the level of sensitivity and sensibility animals possess often seems to outweigh us humans, who think we are the ones who evolved. Our actions, our taunts, and our narrow views prove the evolution theory otherwise.

In conclusion, I recognize that both dogs and cats possess sensitivities and sensibilities that often surpass human understanding. What is needed is the ability to appreciate and cherish the diverse qualities of animals. Instead of engaging in divisive debates over dogs versus cats, we should rather be embracing the beauty and depth of each unique bond, acknowledging that these connections can lead to personal growth and a greater understanding of life’s interconnectedness.
In conclusion, this write-up serves as a heartfelt tribute to the unconditional love, loyalty, and joy that dogs brought to my life but also to the fact that a bond with all animals transcends verbal language.

In a world often clouded by human arrogance, I hope this prompt leaves us with a gentle reminder that there is much to learn and appreciate from the creatures we share this planet with.
